Director of Valuation Role Summary Northstar Financial Advisory is building a specialized valuation practice focused on transfer tax valuations and minority interest appraisals of LP/LLC interests. The Director of Valuation will own technical quality, methodology, report standards, and delivery for FLP/FLLC minority interest engagements, with the opportunity to expand into 409A and financial reporting valuations over time. Core Responsibilities - Lead and sign off on transfer tax valuations, including minority LP/LLC interest appraisals. - Develop defensible support for DLOC and DLOM conclusions based on governing documents and market evidence. - Determine appropriate valuation approaches and key inputs, and oversee engagement execution from scoping through final delivery. - Serve as senior technical contact for estate planning attorneys, CPAs, wealth advisors, and family offices. - Build and enforce standards: intake checklist, workpapers, report templates, discount memos, and QA review process. - Train and mentor analysts. Build a scalable production workflow. - Support audit or inquiry responses as needed, including documentation and technical explanations. Technical Skills Required - Deep experience with transfer tax valuations and minority interest appraisals of LP/LLC interests. - Strong ability to analyze entity agreements and document control rights, restrictions, transfer limitations, and distribution provisions. - Command of valuation approaches and when to use them: - Asset/NAV approach for holding entities and investment partnerships - Income approach (DCF, capitalization) for operating companies - Market approach (GPC/transactions) with defensible selection and adjustments - Advanced capability developing and reviewing key inputs: normalization adjustments, discount rates, multiples, and reconciliation. - Proven ability to produce IRS-ready reports with clean workpapers, tie-outs, and supportable assumptions. - Strong QA discipline and advanced Excel modeling and review skills (ownership schedules, cap tables, waterfalls, sensitivity analysis). Qualifications - 7+ years in business valuation with meaningful volume in gift and estate / transfer tax work. - Track record leading engagements and reviewing models, workpapers, and reports. - Strong report writing and client-facing communication. Preferred - Credential: ASA, CPA/ABV, or CVA (or equivalent). - Experience supporting matters under IRS exam, appeals, or controversy settings. - Experience with adjacent valuations (409A, ASC 805, impairment). Compensation Base salary range: $200,000 to $250,000 plus bonus, commensurate with experience.
