Position Overview
As a Staff Software Engineer on our UX Core team, you’ll lead the design and evolution of foundational backend systems that enable engineers across the organization to build reliable, scalable products.
This role sits at the intersection of architecture, platform thinking, and mentorship—driving systems that support millions of users while shaping how engineering operates at scale.
This is a hybrid role , with an expectation of four days per week in our Manhattan office.
Key Responsibilities
Design and build scalable backend systems and shared infrastructure used across multiple product teams
Lead the architecture of horizontal, cross-cutting systems (e.g., permissions, real-time systems, platform services)
Translate ambiguous, high-impact problems into clear technical strategies and execution plans
Drive improvements in system reliability, scalability, and performance to support mission-critical use cases
Partner with engineers across teams to guide best practices and enable high-quality contributions
Mentor and level up engineers by providing technical guidance, feedback, and architectural direction
What Make You a Great Fit
Proven experience designing and scaling distributed systems serving large user bases (millions+)
Strong backend engineering expertise (language-agnostic; experience matters more than stack) our tech stack includes React (primary frontend framework), Typescript, Ruby on Rails and Golang.
Experience building platform or horizontal systems used by other engineers (not just product features)
Demonstrated ability to operate autonomously and drive complex initiatives from ambiguity to execution
Strong collaboration skills—able to build consensus and influence across teams without authority
Comfortable mentoring engineers and shaping technical direction at the org level
We believe this role requires someone who is comfortable navigating ambiguity, influencing without authority, and balancing speed with long-term system quality.
Bonus (optional)
Experience with real-time systems (e.g., WebSockets at scale)
Familiarity with AI/agentic systems or integrating AI into backend workflows
Background from high-scale environments (e.g., large tech companies or high-growth startups)
