Backend Engineer (Nodejs + Kubernetes) - Canada/LatAm
Contract Length: 3–4 months (with strong possibility of extension)
Location: Canada or LATAM
Rate: Up to $43 USD/hour
Time Zone: Must be able to overlap with PST a few days per week

Our client is building immersive, next-generation gaming experiences across modern platforms, including Smart TVs and constrained devices. THE ROLE
The company is looking for a Senior Backend Engineer with strong Kubernetes expertise to join the team on a contract basis. You’ll play a key role in designing, scaling, and maintaining backend systems that power consumer-facing gaming applications, including environments with constrained hardware.
This is a hands-on role for someone comfortable owning backend architecture, working close to infrastructure, and collaborating with product and engineering leadership.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Design, build, and maintain scalable backend services using Node.js
- Architect, deploy, and manage services running on Kubernetes
- Work with Apache Cassandra (data modeling, performance, reliability)
- Optimize backend systems for constrained environments (e.g. Smart TVs or similar devices)
- Collaborate closely with Product and Engineering leadership to deliver features end-to-end
- Ensure system reliability, performance, and scalability in production
- Clearly communicate technical decisions and tradeoffs
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
- Senior-level Backend Engineering experience
- Strong expertise with Node.js
- Deep hands-on experience with Kubernetes in production environments
- Experience working with Cassandra or similar distributed databases
- Proven experience building and shipping real production systems
- Ability to clearly explain past projects, architectural decisions, and outcomes
NICE TO HAVE
- Experience building Smart TV apps or working with constrained devices
- Exposure to gaming, media, or real-time consumer applications
- Experience using AI tools (e.g. for development, debugging, productivity) and the ability to explain how you leverage them in your workflow
