Job Description

The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for. The New York Times is seeking a veteran journalist to help lead our science coverage. You will work closely with the Science editor and the desk’s reporters to conceive, shape and drive coverage of science and how it impacts the nation and the world. The team’s coverage often involves translating complex research into explanatory pieces or narratives that are as compelling as they are hard-hitting. Candidates should have experience with a wide range of scientific subjects and a comfort with editing a wide range of story types, as well as strong line editing skills with an ability to improve and elevate every story. Candidates should also be strategic thinkers who can help pick and deliver big projects. The Science desk is a highly collaborative team; editors and reporters will work closely together to experiment with new storytelling forms that resonate with readers. In partnership with the desk head, the deputy will support team development, culture and morale and be accountable for the success and development of writers and editors. The deputy needs to be calm under pressure and possess excellent news judgment and diplomatic skills. This is an in-office position, based in New York City, and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance. Responsibilities: In partnership with the desk head, lead and shape coverage; make publishing decisions and take ownership of what is published. Ensure staff safety and wellbeing in the course of reporting. Support team development, culture, and morale; accountable for success and development of writers and editors. Identify opportunities for innovation and collaboration. Own specific goals for the desk as determined by the desk head and drive the team toward success. Contribute directly to the general editing duties of the desk by personally running a small group of reporters. Serve as a hiring manager and ensure that hiring decisions follow fair and equitable practices. Work in close partnership with the desk head and other deputies to manage budgets and deadlines. Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world. You will report to the Science Editor. Basic Qualifications: 10+ years of experience as an editor, ideally with experience across many forms of storytelling, from news to investigations, features and visual projects. 5+ years of experience covering science, with a proven ability to relate these beats to a general audience. Experience with framing and elevating stories for the broadest possible audience. Experience with brainstorming ideas and coaching reporters through tough situations so they produce their best work. Preferred Qualifications: A collaborative, enthusiastic team spirit and a desire to ask deep, tough questions about science and scientists — but also to bring the fascination and delight of new discoveries to the Times’s large and curious readership.
