Electro-Optic Engineer Intern (September 2026, 12 months)

The Opportunity: 8 month work term: September 2026 – April 2027 12 month work term: September 2026 – August 2027 (preferred) How You Will Contribute: You will be joining the Coherent Modem Transmission Electro-Optic R&D group, a team responsible for developing the electro-optic transmission system for Ciena’s coherent optical modems. As an integral member of the team, you will contribute to active research and development projects while gaining hands-on experience in a professional lab environment. You will: Perform hands-on lab characterization and measurement of advanced optical devices. Develop Matlab scripts for test automation, simulation, and data analysis. Model and simulate electro-optic components and subsystems to predict performance. Collaborate with firmware, PCB, and DSP design teams to support system integration. The Must Haves: Working towards a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Physics, Applied Math, or a related discipline. Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with a proactive and curious approach to learning and problem-solving. Demonstrated programming experience in a language such as Matlab, Python, C/C/C#, or Java. Assets: Hands-on experience in a hardware lab with test equipment, electronics, or optics. Familiarity with electro-optic test methods. Knowledge of fiber optic communications or Digital Signal Processing theory. Pay Range: The hourly pay range for this position is $25.00 - $34.00 Pay ranges at Ciena are designed to accommodate variations in knowledge, skills, experience, market conditions, and locations, reflecting our diverse products, industries, and lines of business.
