Job Description
Zed is a fast, collaborative code editor built from the ground up in Rust. We're seeking a Rust Engineer with a strong systems programming background to help shape the future of software development.As a Rust Engineer at Zed, you'll apply your expertise to build and improve features that directly impact developers' daily work. You'll join one of two teams:Core: Crafting the foundation of Zed to create the best code editor in the world. We're building a fast, elegant environment with features like Notebook support, advanced Git integration, and a robust debugger. We're also expanding Zed's reach through improved Linux support and Windows compatibility.AI: Integrating AI into Zed to revolutionize how code is written. We're building features that significantly enhance coding efficiency and quality, positioning Zed as a leader in AI-assisted development.In either team, you'll work on a new kind of desktop application using our custom UI framework, GPUI. This framework enables you to create fluid, responsive interfaces that blend the performance of native apps with the flexibility of web technologies.Key ResponsibilitiesDesign and implement new features for Zed that enhance developer productivityCollaborate with designers and engineers to create intuitive user interfacesSolve complex product challenges, drawing on your systems programming background when neededContribute to architectural decisions that shape Zed's futureWrite clean, maintainable, and efficient codeParticipate in code reviews and collaborate with teammates and community members in real timeHelp improve our development processes and toolingOptimize performance and user experience where necessaryRequirementsStrong proficiency in RustExperience developing production-grade softwareSolid understanding of algorithms and data structuresExcellent problem-solving and debugging skillsStrong product sense and user-centric design approachSelf-directed work ethic and ability to operate autonomouslyExcellent communication skills for remote collaborationWillingness to work on both backend and frontend aspects of the applicationEnthusiasm for pair programming, including several hours weekly in ZedPreferred QualificationsDesktop application development experienceFamiliarity with language servers, compilers, or other developer toolsBackground in building real-time collaborative systemsExperience with AI integration in user-facing applicationsKnowledge of cross-platform development challengesExperience working on product code, front-end, or full-stack developmentLocation: Remote (American or European time zones) or Boulder, Colorado
