This role is responsible for evaluating the financial health of counterparties—primarily SMBs—and developing tailored credit risk assessments and ongoing monitoring strategies. You will work closely with internal stakeholders including the Credit Committee, Finance, and Data teams to manage large exposures, prevent losses, and guide credit decisions with data-backed insights.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>About this </strong><strong><em>roll</em></strong><strong>* (Responsibilities) </strong></p> <ul> <li>Review financial statements (PL, balance sheet, cash flow) to evaluate the creditworthiness of counterparties in retail sector</li> <li>Calculate and interpret key ratios such as leverage, liquidity, and coverage to assess financial risk</li> <li>Write clear, concise credit memos with risk assessments and approval recommendations</li> <li>Determine reserve levels and set exposure limits based on the financial profile and risk tolerance</li> <li>Monitor counterparties for changes in financial health, operating metrics, or market signals</li> <li>Research and analyze existing debt obligations using public records, credit reports, or proprietary tools</li> <li>Identify and escalate key risk indicators to the Credit Committee, with supporting data and rationale</li> <li>Build and maintain monitoring frameworks tailored to different merchant risk profiles and business models</li> <li>Define and configure alerting mechanisms for early detection of deteriorating credit quality<br>Use SQL, Python, and business intelligence tools (e.g., Looker, Hex) to query and analyze risk data</li> <li>Work with Snowflake-based data environments to extract insights and develop risk dashboards</li> <li>Collaborate with data, finance, and engineering teams to improve underwriting efficiency and transparency</li> <li>Stay up to date on macro trends, industry developments, and emerging credit risks across sectors<br><br></li> </ul> <p><strong>Qualification</strong></p> <ul> <li>Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Data Science, or a related field; CFA or CPA a plus</li> <li>5+ years of experience in credit underwriting for counter party risk, financial analysis, risk management, with a focus on SMBs preferred</li> <li>Strong foundation in financial modeling and credit ratio analysis</li> <li>Proficiency in querying and analyzing data using SQL, Python, and platforms like Hex and Snowflake</li> <li>Experience working with BI tools such as Looker, Tableau, or similar</li> <li>Demonstrated ability to make independent, data-backed underwriting decisions</li> <li>Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including stakeholder and committee presentations</li> <li>Experience in fintech, commercial lending, payments, or B2B trade finance</li> </ul> <p> </p> <p data-pm-slice="1 1 []"><strong>AI at Toast</strong></p> <p>At Toast, one of our company values is that we're hungry to build and learn.
