Job Description

Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn’t work together.

So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions – to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we’ve embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.

Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We’re building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.

The Role

The restaurant industry has transformed dramatically in recent years. Owners, operators, and staff have had to rethink how they run service, manage complex operations, and stay competitive in an environment that’s constantly shifting. Square’s Food Beverage team builds the tools that help them adapt and thrive — connecting ordering, production, and operational workflows across Front and Back of House.

We’re looking for a Principal Product Designer to lead design on our highest-priority, company-critical initiatives across Food Beverage — including the integration of AI and automation into the core workflows that power restaurants.

You will operate at the same altitude as senior product and engineering leaders, shaping multi-year experience strategy and driving execution on our most ambitious bets. You’ll define when the system should suggest, automate, escalate, or stay out of the way, ensuring intelligent features reduce cognitive load and speed up service without removing operator control.

This role reports to the Head of Design, Food Beverage.

You Will

Lead company-critical, ambiguous initiatives: Frame and drive complex, zero-to-one or transformation-level initiatives. Align senior stakeholders around a clear experience vision and carry it through execution across teams and surfaces.

Define the future of intelligent hospitality: Establish experience principles and interaction models for how AI and automation integrate into restaurant workflows. Balance automation with operator control, ensuring restaurants remain in command of their business.

Design end-to-end operational systems: Own experience strategy across interconnected surfaces (POS, Kiosk, KDS, Orders, Reporting, etc.).

Develop and scale deep operational empathy: Build an expert-level understanding of restaurant environments — physical space, staff roles, shift changes, peak rush, training realities, and edge cases. Use that context to shape intelligent systems that work reliably in motion, not just in mockups.

Influence at the executive level: Partner with senior leaders across Product, Engineering, Data Science, and Platform teams. Shape roadmap decisions through strong storytelling, prototyping, and systems thinking.

Raise the craft and systems bar: Model excellence in UX architecture, interaction design, and visual craft. Define reusable frameworks and patterns for intelligent features that scale across the organization.

Mentor without managing: Act as a force multiplier across the design org. Elevate critique, coach senior designers, and ... (truncated, view full listing at source)
