Senior Software Engineer, Local Services

<p><strong>The Role</strong></p> <p>We're looking for a senior software engineer<strong> </strong>to define technical direction, champion best practices, and make high-impact investments in the foundations that accelerate Square's ecosystem. You'll collaborate across teams, drive architecture and design decisions, and mentor engineers to deliver resilient, future-ready systems.</p> <p><strong>You Will</strong></p> <ul> <li>Design, build, and evolve Square's Invoices, Appointments, and other Local Services products</li> <li>Lead cross-team initiatives and set technical direction</li> <li>Identify risks and provide pragmatic solutions to unblock teams</li> <li>Solve complex performance and scalability challenges</li> <li>Balance technical debt, system health, reliability, and security</li> <li>Drive stewardship of technical excellence and improve developer experience</li> <li>Establish and uphold high engineering standards</li> <li>Communicate trade-offs clearly and advocate for long-term solutions</li> <li>Mentor and guide engineers across the team</li> <li>Model strong technical leadership and decision-making</li> </ul> <p><strong>You Have</strong></p> <ul> <li>8+ years of software development experience</li> <li>Expertise in large-scale distributed systems</li> <li>Familiarity with one or more object oriented language and strong data modeling/management skills</li> <li>Ability to navigate ambiguity and make data-driven decisions</li> <li>Experience across the full development lifecycle, from product definition to delivery</li> </ul> <p><strong>Even Better</strong></p> <ul> <li>Strong track record of delivering user-facing products at scale with high quality</li> <li>Background in developing business-critical products that streamline scheduling, payments, and client interactions</li> <li>Familiarity with end-to-end commerce and services ecosystems, particularly scheduling and invoicing solutions</li> </ul> <p><strong>Technologies We Use and Teach</strong></p> <ul> <li>Ruby, Java</li> <li>MySQL, DynamoDB, OpenSearch, Redis</li> <li>Protocol Buffers, gRPC, Kafka, Terraform, Kubernetes, Envoy</li> <li>AWS and other cloud platforms</li> </ul> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p>We're working to build a more inclusive economy where our customers have equal access to opportunity, and we strive to live by these same values in building our workplace.
