Job Description
Senior Multiphysics Simulation Engineer
About Helion
We are a fusion power company based in Everett, WA, with the mission to build the world's first fusion power plant, enabling a future with unlimited clean electricity. Our vision is a world with clean, reliable, and affordable energy for everyone.
Since Helion's founding in 2013, we have raised over $1 billion from long-time investors such as Sam Altman, Mithril, and Capricorn Investment Group as well as new investors SoftBank and Lightspeed to propel us forward. Our last prototype, Trenta, completed 10,000 high-power pulses and reached plasma temperatures of 100 million degrees Celsius (9 keV). We are now operating Polaris, our next prototype on the path to the world's first fusion power plant.
This is a pivotal time to join Helion. You will tackle real-world challenges with a team that prizes urgency, rigor, ownership, and a commitment to delivering hard truths – values essential to achieving what no one has before. Together, we will change the future of energy, because the world can't wait.
What You Will Be Doing:
You will own hardware designs for Helion's fusion generator prototypes. You will solve multidisciplinary engineering problems that are necessary for deploying fusion energy to the world and act as a culture driver on a growing team. You will report directly to our Senior Manager of Engineering at our Everett, WA office.
You Will:
- Enhancing Helion’s analysis workflow for critical structures (electromagnets)
- Running transient multiphysics finite-element models to generate margins for critical designs
- Collaborating with a multidisciplinary engineering team to improve critical hardware designs
- Learning from in-house experts to expand your skillset into electrical and thermal analysis
- Building software tools to automate the analysis workflow and allow Helion engineers and scientists to run their own analysis
Required Skills:
- You have a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, applied mathematics, physics or related field with a minimum of 3 years of hands-on engineering experience.
- Strong background in analytical, computational and numerical simulation methods
- Expert level understanding of electromagnetic and thermal finite element modeling
- Experience in taking on complex analysis problems from formulation through hardware testing and model correlation.
- Proficiency with multiphysics finite-element analysis tools such as COSMOL, ANSYS or equivalent
- Experience with programming environments (Matlab, Python, etc.) for scripting, tooling or data analysis
- Familiarity with semiconductor physics, solid mechanics and structural dynamics (modal, transient)
- Familiarity with Slurm or other high-performance computer cluster (HPC) batch schedulers
- Desire to positively impact complex structural designs, rather than just execute on analysis
