The New York Times is seeking an Audio Engineer to work across all current and future shows in our portfolio, with a focus on post-production. The Audio Engineer will be a resource to Opinion Audio shows, supporting Interesting Times with Ross Douthat and The Opinions initially, but may also contribute to the wider NYT Audio portfolio. This role requires a strong ability to adapt to different workflows across teams and deliver high-quality mixes that meet the standards of each show's nuanced sonic identity. As our team expands its reach into video content, the Audio Engineer will work to help our workflows integrate with video post-production processes and ensure the audio quality of our content across platforms is top-tier. You will support the wider team by running recording sessions as needed, troubleshooting any issues in our state-of-the-art VoIP studios, and coordinating technical logistics for off-site video shoots or recordings. You will offer opportunities to contribute original music to our evolving show libraries, so a background in composition is a plus. This is an in-office position, based in Washington, DC and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance. Responsibilities: Be the engineering point person for show teams and mix daily/weekly shows as directed Handle all technical and creative aspects of producing a podcast: pre-production, recording, dialogue editing, mixing, scoring, revisions, final upload and publish Act as first line of defense in troubleshooting studio and Pro Tools workflow issues Help train and assist staff in all aspects of production, including studio operations and Pro Tools best practices General technical support including audio restoration, file management, host/guest setup, and SOP documentation Contribute to conversations about workflow improvements and standardization across our portfolio of shows and products Assist in developing and deploying Pro Tools templates, SOPs, and other team-wide tools Contribute original music compositions to our various show libraries Work with Engineering leadership to help ensure audio processes integrate with the needs of our video teams Occasional evening and weekend technical support Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world You will report to the Technical Manager, Audio Post Production. Basic Qualifications: 5+ years experience as an audio engineer (or equivalent position) required – podcast or broadcast environment Strong knowledge of Pro Tools, iZotope RX, as well as creative plug-ins like Soundtoys Knowledge of video production and an ability to integrate audio best practices with video workflows High level of proficiency with Apple computers Preferred Qualifications: Believe in the New York Times' mission and be dedicated to being part of our innovation and growth Uphold the existing editorial standards of The Times Comfortable with the concept of Loudness and mixing to different specs Quickly, calmly and creatively troubleshoot complex issues Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and follow through on projects to completion Excellent attention to detail, with good organization and time management skills Collaborative attitude complex technical infor ...
