Head of Applied AI

The Role Your Mission We’re looking for a Head of Applied AI that can manage and lead our Applied AI team at Weave. We expect you to lead the people, maintain a healthy working environment, plan long-term architecture initiatives, keep a high-bar of excellence on the team, and grow the team. The buck stops with you on decisions regarding AI architecture and personnel. You will be responsible for driving architectural direction and roadmap execution, as well as supporting the technical and personal development of your team. This position reports directly to the Head of Engineering. The charter of the Applied AI team is: develop and maintain deep understanding of LLMs and their derivatives (e.g., agents, RAG) in order to build, evaluate, and deploy AI features that are valuable, controllable, and trustworthy within the Weave platform. Technical leaders at Weave are expected to maintain hands-on capacity. Whether this is through bug fixes, pull request reviews, or healthy debate of technical decisions. We believe that managers of technical teams must stay technical while staying out of the way of their team. Effective decision making requires technical know-how and trust from the team. You are the leader that scientists and engineers can count on; you are technical, you attack every problem with enthusiasm, and you remove hurdles. What You'll Own Build AI features that clearly solve real customer problems, that users love, that organizations can trust Set the bar for analytical rigor, evidence-based decisions, and meaningful understanding of LLMs Plan and execute on AI architectural investments in coordination with Product and Technical Leadership Foster a culture of shipping compelling AI features to customers rapidly and routinely Develop and maintain quality standards that grow and preserve customer trust Ensure the Weave platform remains at the leading edge of AI technologies Hire, manage, and retain extraordinary AI Engineers and Applied Scientists Maintain a healthy, productive working environment and a high-performing team What You’ll Bring Has worked at an early-stage, product-based startup before ( Rigorous analytical capabilities derived from experience or education (ideally both) Experience building production software with LLMs-in-the-loop Experience building B2B software in regulated industries and/or for enterprise customers Experience leading with a data-first mindset Experience experimenting and implementing emerging frameworks, practices and standards with LLMs Direct and candid with leadership, peers, and direct reports Experience mentoring and growing employees Experience as an architect - proven ability to design and implement robust and scalable systems with flexible and scalable UI that meets future needs Experience overseeing and managing projects across teams Bias to action and speed without compromising rigor What We Offer 🎯 The opportunity to work at a modern, cutting-edge healthcare technology company devoted to meaningful positive impact on human life.
