Head of Communications
YOUR ROLE
As our founding Head of Communications, you will help Overtone break through by defining a new category around modern relationships and earning credibility within it. You’ll shape the narrative that explains why Overtone exists, what makes it different, and why it matters now, and ensure that narrative lands with cultural clarity and trust.
This is a senior, hands-on role. You’ll work closely with the CEO to translate Overtone’s thinking into stories that travel—placing us into the right conversations, with the right voices, at the right moments—while protecting the integrity of the work.
What You’ll Do
- Category narrative: Define and evolve the narrative that positions Overtone as a new kind of relationship platform—not a dating app—shaping how the category itself is understood.
- Breakthrough strategy: Identify the moments, stories, and ideas that can genuinely cut through cultural noise and earn attention from thoughtful, influential audiences.
- CEO amplification: Partner closely with the CEO to shape a public voice that is clear, credible, and distinctive—placing essays, interviews, and appearances that advance the long-term narrative.
- Earned media leadership: Build trusted relationships with journalists and editors, and consistently secure coverage that reinforces Overtone’s category position (not just product announcements).
- Owned thought leadership: Develop and oversee an owned content strategy—essays, research stories, announcements—that deepens understanding and compounds over time.
- Cultural intelligence & risk: Track cultural context, anticipate misinterpretation or backlash, and help Overtone navigate sensitive topics with foresight and restraint.
- Narrative alignment: Ensure external storytelling reflects what’s actually happening inside the company—aligning closely with research, product, community, and voice.
Who You Are
- Senior experience in communications, journalism, or narrative strategy, with a track record of shaping ideas that change how people see a space
- Demonstrated success helping a company, founder, or movement break through and define a narrative, not just generate coverage
- Strong editorial judgment—knowing what should be said, what should wait, and what should never be said
- Experience working directly with founders or public-facing leaders in moments of visibility and risk
- Comfort operating in early-stage, high-ambiguity environments, where there is no playbook and strategy must be invented
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
Salary of $170k to $200k.
This position will receive meaningful stock options with considerable upside potential. We provide standard benefits such as health insurance, dental insurance, etc.
